There are 365 classical Acupuncture points associated with the 14 Meridians. points have been described, most of which are located on one of the main meridians, or energetic pathways. Obstructions can occur along the meridians, due to physical and emotional stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury.

Acupuncturists are extensively trained to insert acupuncture needles into acupuncture points to stimulate the meridians, unblock the flow of energy, and facilitate healing. Acupuncture integrates, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophy with anatomy, physiology and pathology, to relieve pain and improve your holistic health and wellness.

In addition to using tiny needles, acupuncturists also can use cupping, electrostimulation, heat lamps (red light), gua sha, moxa and tuina.

At MAHALO, all our acupuncturists are registered by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta-CAAA, a government regulated body that oversees the acupuncture profession.

Manual Osteopathic Therapy: (MOT)

Manual Osteopathic Therapy is a form of hands-on therapy that focuses on restoring function and eliminating pain by addressing the root cause of the pain, imbalance, injury or illness. A Manual Osteopathic Practitioner is trained in the four main types of hands-on osteopathic sub-disciplines: Osteo-articular adjustments, Fascial release, Cranial-sacral techniques and Visceral Manipulation. Osteo-articular adjustments and fascial release may sound familiar as they are utilized in professions such as physiotherapy and chiropractic commonly known as Manual Therapy. Visceral Manipulation is a form of gentle manual therapy to assess and treat the viscera (organs), their position, suspension system and fascia/ligaments from which they directly attach to the muskuloskeletal system. Imbalances in the viscera and its connective tissue can be directly related to posture and postural imbalances and can impact many systems such as the muskuloskeletal, nervous, vascular, respiratory and digestive systems. The cranial-sacral system consists of the bones of the head and spinal cord as well as the membranes and fluid that surround and support the brain and spinal cord and attach directly to the bones. Dysfunction of any part of this system could have local effects such as headaches, migranes or pain along the spine from the neck to the low back or nervous system symptoms like nerve impingement or end organ dysfunction such as digestive, respiratory or gynecolocigal complaints

Some alignments that can be treated are;
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Shoulder problems, ie frozen shoulder
- Back pain
- Abdominal pain
- Some digestive problems
- Leg pain
- Knee and ankle pain
- Sciatica
- Arms and hand pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Plantar Fasciitis

If you are in a motor vehicle accident (MVA), your doctor may prescribe massage as a part of your treatment plan. Massage can address the stress that goes with a traumatic event like a car accident. It can help address many of the sprains, strains, and other injuries common in a MVA.

If you’re injured in a MVA you should immediately visit your Family Physician. They will assess and document your condition. This serves as a baseline for your care and as evidence of your situation if you proceed to court. Based on your assessment, you’re given permission to access at most 21 treatments for your condition. (This is for the Province of Alberta, each province can have different protocol or number of treatments.)

Often, a Doctor will recommend Physiotherapy treatments first, followed by Chiropractic treatments. If you request massage, they will request that you see a specialist first. That could be your Family Doctor can be an MD, Physiotherapist, or Chiropractor. Often they are not aware of the therapeutic treatments that massage therapists offer. They would refer you to treatments that they are familiar with. This is why, you the patient, must know your rights to be able to provide this information to your Family Doctor.

Insurance companies do not have the right to determine what treatments you access. Your primary health care practitioner does, based on your requests. The practitioners provide information to you about your condition. You then have the choice to decide which services to proceed with.

Treatment Protocol

The goals of massage therapy injury recovery are to:

Reduce stress
Reduce pain and swelling
Improve circulation
Improve range of motion (ROM)
Speed up the recovery process

Immediately after a car accident, massage therapy can help you recover. Massage helps to restore balance to your autonomic nervous system. The relaxation benefits of massage can help reverse the effects that the shock and trauma of a car wreck can have on your nervous system. Massage also promotes circulation of both blood and lymph. This can help manage the swelling that usually comes with motor vehicle accident injuries.

During the first few days or weeks after the accident, massage can help. It helps by preventing the formation of scar tissue and other Myofascial adhesions. Later in your recovery, we can address specific musculoskeletal injuries. This includes whiplash, neck pain, back pain, headaches, shoulder sprains/strains, etc.

Deep tissue massage targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the body’s surface. Deep muscle techniques involve slow strokes, direct pressure or friction movements that go across the muscle grain.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.
Our massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury), repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, and muscle spasms.

We understant that each treatment is unique and each visit may address differents health conditions. What you have to said, what you feel and how you see your treatment plan, is important for us. Depending on your condition and treatment plan, your massage therapist will work with you to achieve your goals.

Prenatal massages are adapted for the anatomical changes you go through during pregnancy. In a traditional massage, you might spend half the time lying face-down on your stomach (which is not possible with a baby belly) and half the time facing up (a position that puts pressure on a major blood vessel that can disrupt blood flow to your baby and leave you feeling nauseous).

But as your shape and posture changes, a trained massage therapist will make accommodations with special cushioning systems that allow you to lie face down safely (at the beginning of your pregnancy). Or you might lie on your side with the support of pillows.

Cupping therapy is a form of traditional medicine that originated in China and West Asia. People have practiced this method for thousands of years. Cupping uses suction to draw blood to or away from specific areas of your body. People mostly use cupping to relieve conditions that cause pain. Some people say it also helps with chronic (ongoing) health issues.

Cupping may ease symptoms of:

Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis.
Back pain, neck pain, knee pain and shoulder pain.
Asthma and other breathing issues.
Carpal tunnel syndrome.
Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders like irritable bowel disease (IBD).
Headaches and migraines.
High blood pressure (hypertension).

A massage is one of the ultimate forms of self-care. Allowing you to spend one hours or more to destressing, relaxing, and relieving muscular soreness will benefit you mentally, emotionally, and physically. hot Stone massage involves the use and placement of basalt River rock on different points of the body. The rocks are heated before use and the massage therapist can then apply deeper pressure to areas of concern without causing any discomfort.

Basalt river rocks are the most commonly used stones during this type of massage because they are smooth from the river’s current and they hold heat well. They are typically made of volcanic rock which enables them to heat quickly and retain that heat for an extended period. Before treatment, the rocks are heated in a professional heater to 110°F to 145°F.

This type of massage allows you to enter deeper into a state of relaxation as the therapist works to relieve muscle pain and tension. The heat within the rocks relaxes the muscles, making them more pliable. Once you are free of some of the tension that you walked in, your massage therapist can release the rest of it during your session. Our hot stone massage combines both traditional massage techniques with those that are used during this treatment. During this massage, your massage therapist will prepare the hot stones for treatment and will typically place them strategically down the center of the back along the spine. The hot stones can also be placed on the stomach, the feet, the chest, the face, and even the toes and the palms of your hands if needed.

The placement of the stones can help relieve pain in the problem areas. Before your session, your massage therapist will discuss your concerns and determine the best location for the stones based on your needs and their evaluation of your physical condition.

Hi! My name is Emily. I’m a student massage therapist in my second year at MaKami College, graduating in 2025.

Coming from a family of medical professionals, I always knew I wanted to help others in some way. After working in the healthcare industry for over ten years, and witnessing how beneficial massage was for me and my family, I decided to become a Registered Massage Therapist. And as I study towards my diploma, I am excited to learn more techniques and practices that will help me in my goals to reduce both people’s pain and stress.

Outside of work and school, I enjoy reading, playing board games with my husband, and spending time with my nieces and nephews!

Looking forward to meeting you!!!

Hi there!

My name’s Yu

I graduated from Makami College. I really enjoy helping people, I would have to say that is why I chose to became a massage therapist. With massage, I can help minimize the clients pain and that helps them live a happier, healthier, pain free life.

I listen to what my clients are looking for during their massage, and when I get feedback from them and when they let me know how much I helped them with whatever the issues was, it makes my heart very happy!

I’m well educated in deep tissue massage, hot stones, prenatal and myofascial cupping. I am also very good at finding trigger points, adhesions, and hypertonic muscles. But, I would have to say I really enjoy Deep tissue and I like to take my time to assess and evaluate what I’ll need to do through palpation.

On my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and going on drives to the country. I find the country very relaxing and peaceful.

I look forward to starting you wellness journey with you!

After years of interest in energy healing, I completed the first and second degree of the Usui Reiki System of Natural Healing in 2023 so that I may share my passion with others.

Reiki is the Japanese term for Universal Life Energy, an energy that flows within and around us.

Stressors and imbalances in our lives can deplete and disrupt the flow of life force energy and result in various health issues.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner receives the Universal Life Energy and transfers it to the client through a gentle hands-on or hands-off approach.

This spiritual energy healing practice activates, releases or transforms energy on all levels (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) to restore balance, promoting a state of harmony and well-being.

I am a wife and mother with children ranging 13 to 29 years of age and work full time as a Registered Nurse in Palliative and End of Life Care. Life can be physically, mentally and emotionally stressful and I have found a refuge in the meditative and nourishing practices of Reiki and Yin Yoga.

I am so excited to be sharing this with you at Mahalo Massage and Wellness.

My dear clients,

I want to apologize as my schedule is limited this 2024. We are trying to grow our second location, Studio J by Mahalo in Downtown Edmonton!

With much Love and appreciation… Anamaria :)

I fell in love with massage therapy when I moved to Alberta in 2013. I believe that the therapeutic touch has a big impact on our lives. Since I was at school, the therapeutic aspect of massage has always interested me.

I try to build my practice by combining new techniques and modalities blended with the holistic side of massage and my passion for the human body and mind. I love to learn how the body works, how it reacts and changes through time and at each stage of human development, but I also try to listen to what you have to said, to what you feel and what you want to achieve when you come to see me. You are the key of my practice.

I really appreciate the versatility of massage therapy and the daily challenges in my day-to-day practice, but the best side of my work is when you come out with a big smile and feeling better!

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your health care team. I’m looking forward to treat you soon !

Becoming a registered massage therapist was a nice transition in my professional path. I am very proud of my choice, and fascinated by a profession that allows me to offer therapeutic treatments with a gentle and more holistic approach.

Being able to see the changes, the satisfaction and the sentiment of relief on my clients throughout treatments is a fulfilling experience, because I can see how beneficial massage therapy is and how the different massage techniques can improve the body’s natural response and enhance the healing process.

For me, a great massage experience is not only the result of my efforts as a therapist, but the partnership between myself and the person under my care.

We, as therapists, rely on the feedback and free-flowing communication with our clients to be sure we are providing the best treatment possible.

I look forward to sharing the positive benefits of massage therapy with you, and I am extremely happy and proud to be a member of your health care team!
